“Early in the Covid-19 pandemic the phrase ‘flatten the curve’ became ubiquitous. Describing the employment of restrictions to hopefully de-escalate the rising panic and slow the rate of infections and death, the phrase entered the vernacular overnight...

Flatten the Curve represents the hope that still prevailed early in the pandemic. The belief that restrictions, and the virus, would be short lived. The flowers bloom and attract butterflies, a Carpenter bee and bugs. The wheat, symbolising renewal and rebirth, adds to the optimistic nature of the work.

Unlike other flower works which foreground the wilting and imperfect blooms as well as the beauty, reminding viewers of the fragility of life, Flatten the Curve demonstrates the optimism present in the early days of Covid-19.” Bree Di Mattina
